Former Bi-Lo Cardiff car park up for sale

A FORMER supermarket car park in Cardiff has been listed for sale via expressions of interest.

Earlier this year, Coles (Wesfarmers) closed its Bi-Lo supermarket at 17 Kelton Street, Cardiff, and leased the site to the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.

The diocese will use the space for its outreach program CatholicCare, but only requires 32 of the 127 car parks at the back of the site.

The landowner, Coles Group Property Development Ltd, has called for expressions of interest in the remaining 95 car parks.

A spokeswoman for the diocese said the unoccupied land would better serve another purpose.

“The remaining land is now open for expressions of interest as it has been deemed surplus to the needs of the diocese,” the spokeswoman said.

“Given that [the diocese is] using the space as a commercial office, where the building’s previous use was as a supermarket, we require substantially less car parking. Future use of [the land] will be determined following [the expressions of interest] process.”

Northlakes Chamber of Commerce president Greg Foster said he hoped Lake Macquarie City Council would buy the land to develop into much-needed public car parking for the town centre.

As it stands, the council does not own any land in Cardiff for this purpose.

The council would not comment.

Colliers International is managing the expressions of interest in the vacant land. Applications close Friday, November 21.
