New Mountains stamp

Tim Forde, Springwood postmaster, holding a book of the new stamp recognising the Blue Mountains National Park.Tim Forde was delighted to see a new Blue Mountains stamp in circulation recently.

The Springwood postmaster unveiled the international stamp to the Gazette a fortnight ago, a stamp that recognises the beauty of the Blue Mountains National Park.

“It’s lovely, it’s a great conversation piece,” he said.

The international stamp shows off the World Heritage-listed park, one of the country’s most visited national parks, and also highlights the Three Sisters rock formation.

It’s not the first stamp to feature the Blue Mountains but it is the most expensive denomination at $5.35 and will be used when posting parcels (over 50 grams and up to 250 grams) overseas.

In 1963 a 5d (pence) stamp was issued to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Crossing of the Blue Mountains showing Lawson, Blaxland and Wentworth. In 2001 The Three Sisters 50 cents international panoramas stamp was released; four years later another 50 cent stamp was issued celebrating the Greater Blue Mountains; and then two years ago the Blue Mountains Crossing was again marked with 2 x 60 cent stamps celebrating the explorers. The postmaster said these commemorative stamps were “very popular with the historical societies, they bought a lot”.

And while high denomination stamps are not normally popular, Mr Forde is expecting an end-of-year Christmas rush for this latest one.

The postmaster said once Mountains residents become aware of the stamps they were “keen to use them and show off the Mountains”.

The Mountains stamp was one of three stamps released on October 1 dedicated to natural wonders of Australian untouched wilderness. Stamps celebrating Judbarra/Gregory National Park, the largest in the Northern Territory, and Victoria’s Alpine National Park were also released.

All new stamp decisions were decided by the Australian Philatelic Society in Melbourne and interest groups could make submissions if they wanted to mark special milestones, Mr Forde said.
