Redhead surf lifesaver Isak Costello powers into fifth place in Coolangatta Gold

CONTROLLED: Isak Costello at Redhead Beach.REDHEAD’S Isak Costello has finished in fifth place in the Coolangatta Gold, producing his trademark fast run-finish to move through the field.

Costello played out a controlled race plan, leaving his push for the podium until the final 7.1km run from Currumbin to Coolangatta.

In the end he finished in a time of 4 hours and 31 minutes – 6 minutes off third place.

The sport’s most iconic race produced a surprising twist, with four-time winner Caine Eckstein withdrawing from the event halfway through, and with a substantial lead.

That opened the door for Mooloollaba’s Josh Minogue to break through for his title, while Northcliffe’s Jake Nicholson took second, and Alexandra Headland’s Samuel Bull finished third.

Costello’s club-mate and coach, Boyd Conrick, finished second in the 40 to 49 years category in a time of 5 hours and 3 seconds.

Redhead’s Luke Nolan finished 9th in the 30-39 years category in a time of 5 hours and 36 minutes, while Brendan Ross, also from Redhead, was forced to withdraw during the event.
