THE entire Spreyton Primary School community came together on Thursday to take part in a walk-a-thon to raise funds for the Heart Foundation.

Four-hundred-and-fifty pupils from kinder through to grade six walked from the school to the Spreyton Racecourse for a 3.5-kilometre return trip.

Twelve-year-old Olivia Dell said they started the day by walking around the school oval for a warm up.

“We’re having a band at the Spreyton Racecourse and some of us have been asked to go up and sing with them,” she said.

Charleigh Bell, also 12, said each pupil set their own fund-raising goals and at each level of fund-raising there were different prizes.

“There are all different ones, [there is] sports equipment and the higher the fund-raising you might an electronic prize like a GoPro or an iPod,” she said.

Eleven-year-old Holly Beaumont said she thought it was a great way to raise money for a good cause.

“It’s a good idea to get everyone active and motivated to be healthier,” she said.

Physical education teacher Rebecca Melhuish said the kids were excited for the walk-a-thon.

“It’s good to have something different in their routine,” she said.

“It’s also nice to have got the parents included.

“We’ve encouraged them to come and sit in the grandstand, listen to the music and have lunch.”

The pupils had special guest Subman from Subway come along for the walk, as Latrobe Subway was a major supporter of the event.

The store delivered Subway lunches for children at the Spreyton Racecourse.

“I’d like to thank the Doctors Rocksters for donating their time and also Nigel and his team at the Spreyton Racecourse for donating their time too,” Ms Melhuish said.

The school has yet to complete a tally of the money raised during the event.
