Smyth takes Queensland title

KIAMA golfer Travis Smyth is continuing to make a name for himself.

Port Kembla junior Smyth, 19, recently won the Queensland Amateur Championship, which followed two top-10 finishes at amateur invitational tournaments in the US.

The Kiama Golf Club competitor will now turn his focus to a three-day camp, with the NSW State Men’s team preparing for the NSW Open Golf Championship in December.

“The past few months have been pretty good; the win in Queensland was great and I was pretty happy with how I went in America,” Smyth said.

“Queensland was a lot of golf. The final of the championship was a matchplay tournament and to qualify for that you had to finish in the top 32 of the strokeplay tournament.

“I finished second in the strokeplay, and then the matchplay was another 36 holes and I managed to finish one-up to win.”

Smyth’s results in the US – tied eighth in the Dogwood Invitational and equal fifth in the Rice Planters Amateur – were pleasing as it showed he can match it with some of the best amateurs in the world.

“At the Dogwood, I shot 14 under and tied for eighth. If I shoot that in Australia I’d been finishing somewhere in the top three.”

The NSW Men’s Team spot guarantees him a position in the NSW Open.
