Staples added to Bluesfest fare

TWO more Bluesfest sideshows have been announced for Newcastle Lizotte’s.

Legendary gospel singer Mavis Staples, 75, will play the venue on April 10.

Born in Chicago, she was a member of the family band, the Staples Singers, who recorded hits such as I’’ll Take You There and Respect Yourself.

Staples is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is listed as one of the 100 greatest singers of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.

She is still touring and recording today, including a recent show with Jeff Tweedy of alt country stars Wilco, and she fronted Arcade Fire in a show this year.

The other big star coming is Hawaiian ukulele wizard Jake Shimabukuro, who will play on April 5. Declared a music hero by Rolling Stone, his most recent album was produced by Alan Parsons (who produced Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd). He has played with music icons such as Cyndi Lauper, Les Paul, Bette Midler, Ziggy Marley and Levon Helm.

It was also announced on Monday that indie rock star Michael Franti and his band Spearhead will play at Newcastle Panthers on April 8 and at Bluesfest at Byron Bay next year.

Tickets are on sale now at $115 (seat only) for Staples and $60 (seat only) for Shimabukuro. Franti tickets go on sale on Thursday.
