The HUB has given the campus a $10,000 grant, after meeting with staff and seeing the impressive work that had been done to refurbish the kinder classroom.

The HUB secretary Sandra How said the group always liked to support locals by making sure grants went straight into things for the community.

“We support Sheffield School significantly but we saw that Railton had fallen off our radar,” she said.

“We’ve left it up to the school to decide what they needed but we could see that there was a need for support.”

The HUB started out about 30 years ago as the recycling centre, but today mainly acts as an op shop.

“The money that we get selling things in the op shop gets distributed,” treasurer Judy Gibson said.

Community groups and individuals can write letters to The HUB requesting financial assistance, from sports trips away to helping host an event.

“When we get lots of requests and we’re working it out the atmosphere is buzzing and it’s a real feel-good feeling,” Ms Gibson said.

Sheffield School principal Ron Daly said the community was very fortunate to have an organisation such as The HUB.

“[The donation] is extremely generous, we’ve been very fortunate over the years to have received considerable support from The HUB and certainly at times it’s been quite overwhelming,” he said.

Railton campus teacher Amanda Von Schill said the funds would go towards a number of things including developing structures and equipment for outside play.

“Our priorities for the funds will include durable construction sets that can be used for play, resources to support our literacy and numeracy programs such as Guided Reading sets and audio books, and science equipment,” she said.

She said the Railton campus staff were overjoyed to be working with The HUB to help achieve their long-term visions.
