Thieves reach through pet flaps to break in

Thieves have reached through dog and cat flaps to steal keys from some Wellington Point properties.

Police have warned residents to be extra careful with home security in the suburb after a spate of “sneak” break and enters.

Burglars have used any possible method of entry, including unlocked windows, screen doors and dog and cat flaps to break into properties.

The offenders have also targeted businesses. Cash was stolen from a Main Road cafe after the thieves broke in through a window.

Cleveland Police Station Sergeant Mark Thomas said thieves were taking advantage of windows left open during the warmer months to break into properties.

He asked people to keep their keys and other valuables out of sight and easy access, as well as keeping doors and windows locked.

Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
