Wollartant keeps building: Brasch’s high hopes for Melbourne Cup Day meeting

Photo: JUDE KEOGH 1103racehorse1ORANGE trainer Jeff Brasch is hoping his horse Wollartant continues its steady development in today’s Danielle Louise Maiden Plate (1300m) at Towac Park.

Wollartant, a six-year-old bay gelding, is one of Brasch’s “up-and-coming” horses, and despite only having four starts, the Orange trainer said he is confident it will grab its first win today.

“He’s had two placings from his first four starts so he’s progressing pretty well,” Brasch said.

“I’d say I’m reasonably confident about his chances.”

The gelding will appreciate the the distance, Brasch said, after trialling twice over 1000 metres before his first start at Parkes over 800 metres on August 30.

“He ran sixth in Parkes and came fifth in both those trials,” Brasch said.

“But he got stuck a bit too far back in those runs, and over the shorter distance didn’t have much chance.

“He’s always found the line nicely though, and the 1300 should suit him down to the ground, and keep him in his comfort zone.

“His last start at 1400 he came second in Forbes. Before that he came third at Bathurst in a pretty strong field.

“The main thing is I just don’t want to push him too far distance-wise, but he should be right [today].”

Brasch said the form of the race’s other horses poses the main problem for Wollartant and he singled out five-year-old bay gelding Youknow Wotsisname, trained by Cootamudra’s Debbie Priest.

“There is some form there from the other horses in the race,” Brasch said.

“Youknow Wotsisname has had a few placings recently I think, but they might have been at the picnics, but he’ll be tough to beat.”

Gates open at Towac Park at midday, with racing kicking off at 1.50pm.

The Danielle Louise Maiden Plate (1300m) jumps at 2.35pm, just prior to Racing Orange’s showing of the Melbourne Cup at 3pm.
