More than 70 women came together for a morning tea fund-raiser hosted by Shortland federal MP Jill Hall.

Among them were at least seven women who had battled breast cancer.

Windale’s Rena Ross received the all clear in March, and Mount Hutton’s Elaine Willis was the longest survivor in the room, declared cancer-free for 18 years.

The pair were given the honour of cutting the cake.

Also there to share their knowledge were representatives from Newcastle Private Hospital, the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation and Newcastle-based Breast Cancer Trials Group.

Newcastle Private Hospital oncology educator Lisa Bartley commended the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation, of which she is a board member.

“Whenever [the foundation goes] to conferences we’re always the envy of everyone there because nowhere else Australia-wide has a service like HBCF,” she said.

The not-for-profit organisation provides transport for cancer patients, domestic cleaning services and post-operative care.

More than $700 was raised at the event, which will be split evenly between the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation and the Breast Cancer Trials Group.

The Cancer Council will also receive more than $300, which was raised through the sale of Pink Ribbon Day merchandise.
